A cylinder leaking from the tank, rusting through or running out every evening is not worth more repair bills. Replacing it is also the moment to fix what annoyed you about the old one: weak showers, cold water by the third shower, or a unit that eats half the laundry.
We replace electric and LPG storage cylinders in homes across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. You get a clear quote, a cylinder sized for how your household really uses hot water, a tidy install that meets the Building Code.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

When it is time for a new cylinder
Consumer NZ puts a cylinder's life at around 10 to 15 years. Age alone is not a reason to replace, and plenty of faults are a straightforward hot water repair, but these signs usually mean the end:
- Water leaking from the tank shell rather than a valve or fitting
- Rust-coloured hot water or flakes coming through the taps
- A growing household running the cylinder dry every night
- Wanting mains pressure showers instead of a low pressure header tank
- Repeated repairs on the same unit in the last few years
- A cylinder that split or leaked after a hard frost
Seismic restraint matters here
Christchurch knows what a full cylinder does in an earthquake. A storage cylinder holds a lot of heavy water, and if it is not strapped to the framing it can tip, tear its pipes and flood the house. G12/AS1 sets out restraint for storage water heaters, and the Natural Hazards Commission urges owners to secure heavy water tanks.
Every cylinder we install is restrained to the framing, with flexible connections where the maker specifies them. Around 67,000 homes went through the earthquake repair programme after 2010 and 2011, so on any existing unit we see, we check the restraint and tell you if it is missing or loose.
How It Works
Choosing the right replacement
The big decisions are pressure, size and energy source. Mains pressure cylinders are now the main type fitted in New Zealand homes and give strong, even showers, but old galvanised pipe in some bungalows needs checking before it goes onto mains pressure. Low pressure cylinders are cheaper to swap like for like and gentler on old pipes.
For size, we ask how many people live in the house, how many showers run at once and whether there is a big bath. Too small and it runs out; too big and you pay to keep water hot that you never use. Gas hot water in Christchurch runs on LPG, from bottles, a bulk tank or a piped LPG street supply. We will talk through whether an LPG storage unit, continuous flow or a heat pump water heater suits your home before you commit.
What is included in a replacement
A proper install is more than swapping the tank. We drain and remove the old cylinder, fit the new one with new valves (expansion control, pressure limiting where the maker requires it, temperature and pressure relief, and a tempering valve so bathroom hot water stays within Building Code limits), run the drain lines so discharges go somewhere safe, and restrain the cylinder. We commission it, check the temperature at the taps and take the old unit away.
Frost is the local extra. Christchurch averages around 80 ground frost days a year, and Master Plumbers warns that freezing can split pipes, fittings and hot water cylinders. Where a cylinder or its pipes sit in a garage, an outside cupboard or a cold roof space, we lag the exposed pipework as part of the job.
What affects the price
Every replacement is quoted after we see the site. The main price factors are:
- Cylinder type and capacity
- Converting from low pressure to mains pressure
- Getting the old cylinder out of an upstairs cupboard or ceiling space
- Extra framing for seismic restraint
- Any electrical work for a new element, circuit or controller
- Lagging or rerouting pipes exposed to frost
Christchurch installs: what we watch for
Bungalow cupboards in suburbs like St Albans and Fendalton are often too small for a modern mains pressure cylinder of the same capacity. Newer homes in Rolleston, Halswell and Wigram can have cylinders in tight spaces above garages, where drain lines and access need planning. On rebuilt homes with engineered slabs, moving a cylinder can mean new routes for pipes rather than simply dropping them under the floor.
Orion, the lines company for Christchurch and Selwyn, can use ripple control to switch hot water cylinders off at network peaks, which fall on very cold winter mornings and evenings. Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Pegasus are on the MainPower network instead. If your cylinder is on a controlled tariff, we size it with enough storage to ride through those periods.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Hot Water Cylinders
Sized on a site visit
We size the cylinder from how many people live in the house, how many showers run at once and whether there is a big bath, not from a guess over the phone.
Restrained every time
Every cylinder we fit is strapped to the framing in line with G12/AS1, and we check the strapping on older cylinders while we are there.
Old pipes checked first
Before an older home goes onto mains pressure, we check the existing pipework and fittings can take it.
Ready for frost
Exposed pipework in garages, outside cupboards and cold roof spaces is lagged as part of the install.
Price in writing, old unit gone
The full price is agreed in writing before we book the job, and removing the old cylinder is part of it.
Hot Water Cylinders FAQs
How long does a hot water cylinder replacement take?
A like-for-like swap usually takes three to five hours. Upgrading from low to mains pressure, or moving the cylinder, takes longer, and we tell you when we quote.
Do new cylinders need earthquake straps?
Yes. G12/AS1 sets out seismic restraint for storage water heaters, and we restrain every cylinder we install.
Can I get a gas hot water cylinder in Christchurch?
Yes, on LPG. Gas in the South Island is LPG, so gas water heaters here run from bottles, a bulk tank or a piped LPG supply.
Can a hot water cylinder freeze?
Master Plumbers warns that freezing can split pipes, fittings and cylinders. Cylinders in garages or outside cupboards, and the pipes feeding them, should be lagged.
Will you take the old cylinder away?
Yes, removal of the old cylinder is part of the job.
