The kitchen sink works harder than any other fixture in the house. It takes grease, food scraps, hot water and the dishwasher's discharge every day, and the cupboard underneath is where slow drips quietly swell the cabinetry before anyone notices.
We do kitchen plumbing across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri, from fixing a leaking trap or fitting a new mixer to plumbing a full renovation. We connect dishwashers and fridge water lines properly, clear blocked wastes and work with your kitchen company so the plumbing ends up where the cabinets need it.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Dishwashers, fridges and filtered taps
A dishwasher installation needs a hot or cold supply (check the manual), an isolation valve you can reach, and a waste connection that cannot siphon dirty water back into the machine. We follow the maker's instructions on drain hose height and use a proper spigot on the sink trap rather than an improvised fitting.
Fridge water lines need their own isolation valve and, ideally, a filter. Cheap plastic lines kinked behind a fridge are a common cause of slow leaks under kitchen floors, so we use suitable pipe, leave slack to pull the fridge out and test for leaks before it goes back. Christchurch's town supply has been chlorinated since 2018, and a filtered tap at the sink is a simple way to take the chlorine taste out of drinking water. Our water filtration page explains the options.
How It Works
Blocked sinks and hidden leaks
Kitchen blockages are usually grease and food that have set inside the trap or waste pipe. Boiling water and chemical cleaners rarely fix it for long, and harsh chemicals can damage older pipes. We clear the trap and waste with the right tools, and if the blockage is further along, it has become a blocked drain and we clear that too. Wiping greasy pans before washing and using a sink strainer prevents most repeat blockages.
A dripping mixer or a weeping hose is more than a nuisance in Christchurch. Households pay extra for water use above a daily allowance, and the council offers a remission for leaks on proof they were repaired promptly. Our invoice serves as that proof.
Cost
Simple jobs like a trap repair or a mixer swap sit at the low end. Dishwasher installs, fridge lines, filtered and boiling water units and renovation work depend on what is involved, and we quote those first. If you have bought your own sink, tapware or appliances, we can install them.
Christchurch kitchen renovations
Moving the sink to an island is a popular change. On the suspended timber floors found in many older bungalows, in suburbs like Merivale, Beckenham and St Albans, we can usually run the waste and supply underneath. Many homes rebuilt after the earthquakes on TC2 and TC3 land sit on enhanced concrete rafts or engineered foundations, and many newer homes are built on slabs. There, an island sink may mean cutting the slab or using a pumped waste, and cutting an engineered foundation needs checking first. Apartments and townhouses near the central city often share waste stacks, and the body corporate may have rules about changes.
Older Christchurch kitchens also hide tired pipework. Galvanised supply pipe can be narrowed by corrosion, which shows up as poor flow at the new mixer you just paid for, and under-sink wastes in 1970s and 1980s homes are often a patchwork of past repairs. When the cabinets are out, it costs far less to repipe those sections than to come back once the new kitchen is in. Pipes on cold outside walls are also worth lagging while they are exposed, given how many frosts the city gets.
Cafés and commercial kitchens
Commercial kitchens have extra rules. Under Christchurch City Council's Trade Waste Bylaw 2025, in force from 1 July 2025, cafés and restaurants usually need a trade waste consent, and grease traps must be maintained and cleaned with the waste removed by an approved operator. When we plumb a new commercial sink or dishwasher, we connect it through the grease trap where required, and our grease trap cleaning service can keep the trap on schedule.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Kitchen Plumbing
Dishwashers plumbed to spec
We follow the maker's instructions on drain hose height, loop the hose high under the bench and use the correct waste spigot, so dirty water cannot siphon back.
Leak-tested fridge lines
Fridge water lines get suitable pipe, a dedicated isolation valve and enough slack to pull the fridge out, and we test before it goes back.
Renovations planned early
We work through floor type, slab or raft foundations, island waste routes and body corporate rules with your kitchen company during planning, not on install day.
Old pipework flagged while open
When the cabinets are out we point out corroded galvanised supply, patched wastes and pipes that need lagging, while the fix is cheap.
Fixed price before we start
The price is agreed before any work starts.
Kitchen Plumbing FAQs
Can you install my new dishwasher?
Yes. We connect the supply and waste to the maker's instructions, with an isolation valve and a correct high-looped drain.
How much does a kitchen plumber cost in Christchurch?
Larger jobs such as renovations and appliance installs are quoted first.
Why does my kitchen sink keep blocking?
Usually grease and food building up in the trap or waste. We clear it properly and show you how to keep it clear.
Can you move my sink to an island bench?
Usually yes. It is simpler on a timber floor than on a concrete slab or engineered foundation, and we check the waste route before you commit.
Can you fit a filtered water tap?
Yes. It is a simple way to take the chlorine taste out of Christchurch town water. We fit under-sink filters with a dedicated tap.
Do you install boiling water taps?
Yes, we do the plumbing for boiling and filtered water units. Some also need an electrician for a power point.
