A jetter scours the whole inside of the pipe, not just a hole through the middle.

Hydro jetting feeds a hose and a purpose-built nozzle from a high-pressure pump. Rear-facing jets drive the hose up the pipe while scouring the walls, and a forward jet breaks into whatever is ahead. A cable machine bores a channel through a blockage; a jetter cleans the full circumference of the pipe, which is why the line stays clear for longer.

Cheeky's Plumbers jets drains across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. It is the tool we reach for when fat has coated a kitchen line, when silt and gravel have settled in a stormwater pipe, or when fine root mats have filled a drain and a cutter alone will not shift them.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Hydro Jetting Jobs We Handle Across Christchurch

  • Hydro jetting
  • Water jetting drains
  • Grease removal
  • Tree root jetting
  • Stormwater jetting
  • Commercial drain jetting

When jetting is the right tool

Jetting is not always needed. For a simple wipe blockage, like a blocked toilet, a drain machine is faster and cheaper. Jetting earns its cost in these situations: For a home line that only needs a routine clean, standard drain cleaning is often enough.

  • Kitchen and commercial lines lined with fat that has set on the pipe wall
  • Stormwater pipes and sumps packed with silt, sand, leaves or gravel
  • Fine root mats that a mechanical cutter pushes aside rather than removes
  • Long runs where a cable cannot reach the far end
  • Preparing a pipe for CCTV inspection or relining, where the wall must be clean
  • Drains that block again within weeks of being cleared with a cable

Older and quake-affected pipes need care

The skill in jetting is matching nozzle and pressure to the pipe. A penetrating nozzle opens a full blockage, a flushing nozzle with wide rear jets moves silt and gravel, and rotating or chain nozzles strip roots and scale. Earthenware, pitch fibre and cracked pipe need lower pressure and a gentler head than solid PVC, or the jetter can make an existing crack worse.

That matters in Christchurch. Many drains here went through the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, and some sit on land the government classed as TC2 or TC3 because of liquefaction risk. Before we jet an older line, we usually run a CCTV drain inspection. If the camera shows a displaced joint or a collapsed section, we tell you jetting is not the answer rather than blasting water into the ground around the pipe.

How It Works

Assess the line and run a camera first on older pipes
Choose the nozzle and pressure to suit the pipe and blockage
Jet from the lowest access point upstream
Flush the line and clear any sumps or traps
Camera check the result
Advise on cause, prevention and any repair needed

Your pipe or the council's?

On a standard gravity sewer, Christchurch City Council owns the main, the connection and roughly the first metre of the lateral inside your boundary. The rest of the lateral on your land is yours to maintain, and that is the part we jet. If the camera shows the blockage is in the council's section, we give you the footage so you can report it.

Some Christchurch properties, especially in the east and in newer subdivisions, are on a pressure or vacuum sewer instead. A pressure system has a tank and pump on the property; tanks installed by SCIRT and in certain subdivisions are owned and maintained by the council, so we do not jet into them. On a vacuum system in areas like Shirley, Aranui or Prestons, the council asks you to call it first, and if the vacuum system is working, we check your private lateral. Waimakariri District Council also says it will reimburse private plumber or drainlayer costs caused by a fault in its own wastewater pipes.

Grease, cafés and the trade waste bylaw

Fat is the most common reason commercial kitchens call us for jetting. Christchurch City Council's Trade Waste Bylaw 2025 came into force on 1 July 2025. It treats grease traps as pre-treatment devices that must be maintained and cleaned, with the waste taken away by an approved operator. If a neglected trap lets fat into the sewer, the business can be liable for the damage.

Jetting clears the line after the trap, but if fat keeps reaching the drain, the trap is the real problem. We look at both, and if your grease trap cleaning is overdue we can arrange it on the same visit.

Hydro jetting cost in Christchurch

The final price depends on how much material is in the pipe, the length of the run, the number of access points, and whether a camera inspection is needed before or after. Commercial grease lines and long stormwater runs are quoted on site.

You get the price before the jetter comes off the van. If jetting uncovers a broken section, we show you the footage and quote the repair separately so you can decide. Where roots keep coming back at the same joints, relining that section usually costs less over time than jetting it every year. For silted stormwater lines and sumps, our stormwater drains service covers the outlets and downpipes as well.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Hydro Jetting

Jetters and cameras on the vans

Our vans carry jetters and drain cameras, so the line can be checked, cleared and checked again on one visit.

Pressure matched to the pipe

Earthenware, pitch fibre and quake-affected pipe get lower pressure and a gentler nozzle, and we will not jet a pipe the camera shows has collapsed.

Video of the result

We run the camera after jetting and send you the footage in your job report, so you can see the pipe is clean.

Straight answers on ownership

If the fault is in the council's section or a council pressure tank, we tell you and give you the footage to report it.

Price before we start

The price is agreed before any work begins.

Hydro Jetting FAQs

What is hydro jetting?

Drain cleaning with high-pressure water fed through a hose and nozzle. The jets scour the full inside of the pipe, removing grease, silt and roots rather than just punching through the blockage.

How much does hydro jetting cost in Christchurch?

Long runs, heavy grease or commercial lines are quoted on site before we start.

Can hydro jetting damage old pipes?

It can if the wrong pressure is used on cracked or fragile pipe. That is why we camera older and quake-affected lines first and adjust the pressure and nozzle, or recommend another approach.

Can you jet a pressure sewer?

We jet the private gravity line from the house to the tank. Council-owned pressure tanks and pumps are maintained by the council, so faults there should be reported to it.

How long does jetting last?

On a sound pipe with a one-off build-up, a long time. On a root-affected line, roots grow back from the same joints, which is when repair or relining becomes the better option.

Do you jet stormwater drains and sumps?

Yes. We clear silt and debris from stormwater pipes and sumps on homes and commercial sites.
