Most of Christchurch is on a council sewer, but some properties on the rural edge of the city and across Selwyn and Waimakariri still treat their own wastewater with a septic tank and a soakage field. Looked after, a septic system is quiet and reliable for years. Ignored, it shows up as slow drains, a smell across the lawn and, eventually, a costly field replacement.
We handle the plumbing side of septic systems: the drain from the house to the tank, the tank itself, its baffles, lids and outlet filter, and the distribution lines out to the field. For pump-outs we work with licensed suction truck operators, so you deal with one team and get one report.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Signs your septic system needs attention
Septic trouble almost always starts small. The sooner we see it, the more likely the fix is a clean-out or a drain repair rather than a new soakage field. Watch for:
- Every drain in the house running slowly, not just one
- Toilets gurgling when the washing machine empties
- A sewage smell near the tank, the vent or the field
- Grass over the soakage area that is greener, lusher or soggier than the rest
- Water pooling around the tank lid after rain
- An alarm sounding on an aerated treatment unit
Septic tank or pressure sewer tank?
Not every tank in a Christchurch back yard is a septic tank. Since the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, Christchurch City Council has installed pressure sewer systems in some areas because they cope better with liquefaction and high groundwater. Each property on a pressure system has a tank with a small pump that pushes wastewater into a shared main, plus an alarm box. It does not treat the wastewater the way a septic tank does.
Who looks after it depends on how it was installed. Tanks put in by SCIRT between 2011 and 2017, and in certain subdivisions, are owned and maintained by the council, so an alarm or fault goes to the council first. Some tanks, pumps and control panels are privately owned, and those need a plumber or drainlayer. If you are not sure which you have, we can tell you on a visit, and our wastewater pump stations page covers the private side.
How It Works
What a septic service includes
A proper service is more than emptying the tank. We lift the lids, measure the sludge and scum layers, inspect the inlet and outlet baffles, clean or replace the outlet filter, and run water through the house drains to confirm everything reaches the tank freely.
When the tank needs pumping, we arrange the suction truck and stay on site to inspect the empty tank for cracks, root intrusion and damaged fittings while it is open. You get a written report with photos, useful for your own records and for buyers if you sell.
Common septic repairs we handle
Most septic call-outs come down to a handful of faults. Blocked or broken pipe between the house and the tank is the most common, often from tree roots or ground movement, and a CCTV drain inspection shows exactly where it is. Cracked or missing lids are a safety risk and let stormwater flood the tank. A clogged outlet filter backs the whole system up. We repair all of these and can relay damaged distribution lines to the field.
Some rural systems pump effluent uphill or across a section to reach the field, and a failed pump or float switch is another regular call-out. Where effluent has started surfacing, we stop the cause first, then talk to you about what the field needs.
What affects the cost
Every system is different, so we quote after an inspection. The main factors are:
- Tank size, age and material
- Truck access to the tank on a long rural driveway or tight section
- Whether pipes need digging up or can be repaired from the access points
- How much of the soakage field is affected
- Pump, float switch or alarm parts on pumped systems
Looking after your system between visits
Simple habits make a big difference. Keep wipes, fats and harsh chemicals out of the drains, spread laundry across the week, keep vehicles and stock off the soakage field, and fix running toilets quickly so the tank is not flooded with clean water. If your system was installed under a consent, follow the maintenance conditions in that consent.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Septic Tank Cleaning
One team, one visit
We arrange the licensed suction truck and stay on site while the tank is open, so the pump-out and the inspection happen together.
Photo report every service
You get a written report with photos of the tank, baffles and outlet filter, building a maintenance history for your records or a sale.
Cameras before digging
When the house-to-tank drain keeps blocking, we run a camera through it to find roots or ground movement before anything is dug up.
Registered drainlayers on site
Pipe relays and distribution line repairs are done by PGDB-registered drainlayers, with council paperwork handled where the work needs consent.
Fixed price first
Septic work starts with a free quote, and the price is agreed before any work begins.
Septic Tank Cleaning FAQs
How often should a septic tank be pumped?
It depends on tank size and how many people live in the house. A common guide is every three to five years, with an inspection in between. We can tell you what suits your system after a look.
Why does my septic tank smell?
Usually a full tank, a damaged or poorly sealed lid, a blocked vent or a cracked pipe. Most of these are quick fixes once the source is found.
Is the tank on my property a septic tank?
Not always. Some Christchurch homes have a pressure sewer tank with a pump and alarm box, which sends wastewater to a council main. Many of those are council owned, so faults go to the council first.
Do you pump out septic tanks?
We arrange pump-outs with licensed suction truck operators and inspect the tank while it is empty, so the job is done properly in one visit.
Can I use drain cleaners with a septic tank?
Harsh chemical drain cleaners can upset the bacteria a septic tank relies on. If a drain is blocked, call us and we will clear it mechanically.
Do you cover rural Selwyn and Waimakariri?
Yes. We look after septic systems on rural and lifestyle properties around Christchurch and across Selwyn and Waimakariri districts.
