When a property runs on a pump, the pump is the water supply. If it stops, there is no shower, no flushing toilet and no water for the stock trough. When it starts to fail, it usually warns you first: short bursts of running, a new noise, or pressure that surges and drops while you are in the shower.

We diagnose the pump, pressure switch, controller and pressure tank together, because the fault is often not where it seems. Then we repair what can be repaired and replace what cannot, with a fixed price first, across Christchurch, Banks Peninsula, Selwyn and Waimakariri.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Water Pumps Jobs We Handle Across Christchurch

  • Pressure pump installation
  • Tank pump replacement
  • Bore pump repairs
  • Pump cycling on and off
  • Noisy pumps
  • Variable speed pumps

Signs your pump needs attention

Catch these early and a repair is often cheap. Leave them and the motor usually pays the price:

  • The pump switches on and off rapidly, or runs with every tap closed
  • Pressure surges and drops while a tap is running
  • Loud humming, grinding or vibration
  • The pump runs but delivers little or no water
  • The power circuit or the pump's own overload keeps tripping
  • Water leaking from the pump body or fittings

Restricted supplies and tank pumps around Christchurch

Outside the city, many pumps exist because of how rural water is delivered. On Waimakariri District Council's restricted rural supplies, in the country around towns such as Rangiora and Kaiapoi, water trickles through a restrictor into a tank on the property, and a pump then supplies the house from that tank. Tampering with the restrictor is chargeable, so when the house runs short the answer is more storage or better pump control, not a bigger flow from the council.

Banks Peninsula has its own restricted supplies. At Birdlings Flat, Little River, Pigeon Bay and Wainui, each property needs a private storage tank and use is limited to 1,000 litres a day. Rainwater tanks on lifestyle blocks and baches work the same way. In every case the pump, its controller and the tank level all have to work together.

How It Works

Check the pump, switch, controller and pressure tank
Find the cause, not just the symptom
Fixed-price repair or replacement options
Install and prime the pump
Set cut-in and cut-out pressures correctly
Test the whole system under real use

Types of pumps we work on

Different supplies need different pumps, from the house supply to irrigation systems. We work on:

  • Pressure booster pumps for weak town supply or long supply pipes
  • Tank pumps for restricted supplies and rainwater systems
  • Submersible and jet bore pumps on private bores
  • Sump and stormwater pumps for low-lying sections
  • Wastewater pumps, including private pressure sewer tanks, with a licensed drainlayer involved

Why pumps cycle, freeze and fail early

Rapid cycling is the most common pump fault, and it is hard on motors. The usual causes are a pressure tank that has lost its air charge or has a ruptured bladder, a faulty pressure switch, or a hidden leak somewhere in the system that lets pressure bleed away.

Running dry is the other big killer. A tank that empties in a dry Canterbury summer, a blocked foot valve or a failed float switch can leave the pump spinning with no water to cool it. Controllers with dry-run protection shut it down before damage is done, and we recommend them on any tank or bore. Winter brings the opposite risk: a pump in an open shed or exposed pipework on a frosty morning can freeze and crack. Master Plumbers advises lagging exposed pipes, and an insulated pump cover is cheap insurance.

What affects the cost

The total depends on:

  • Repair versus replacement, and the pump brand and size
  • Whether the pressure tank, switch or controller also needs replacing
  • Access: a pump shed beside the house versus a bore down a paddock
  • Lifting gear for deep submersible bore pumps
  • Electrical work if the supply or isolation switch needs upgrading

Town supply and booster pumps

Christchurch's town water is pumped from deep aquifer wells through the council network, and hill suburbs are fed from reservoirs and tanks to keep pressure steady. Most homes on the flat do not need a pump at all. Where pressure is poor, the cause is often an old or undersized supply pipe from the boundary, which is the owner's to maintain. We tell you honestly when the better fix is a water main repair rather than a booster pump, and when a booster really is the answer for low water pressure.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Water Pumps

Whole system diagnosed

We test the pump, pressure switch, controller and pressure tank together, because a cycling pump is often a tank or switch fault, not the motor.

Dry-run and frost protection

On tank and bore supplies we recommend controllers with dry-run protection, and we lag exposed pipework so a hard frost does not crack the pump.

Water back the same day

On rural supplies we aim to get water back on the same day, fitting a temporary pump if a replacement has to be sourced.

Honest about pipe versus pump

If weak town pressure is really an undersized supply pipe, we say so rather than selling you a booster.

Water Pumps FAQs

Why does my pump keep turning on and off?

Usually the pressure tank has lost its air charge, the pressure switch is faulty, or there is a leak in the system. All three are fixable.

Can you replace my pump the same day?

Often, for common pressure and tank pumps. If a specific model is needed, we can fit a temporary pump so you are not without water.

I am on a restricted rural supply. Why do I keep running out?

The restrictor only lets a set amount into your tank each day. Running out usually means demand is outstripping that flow or the tank is too small. More storage or better pump control helps; adjusting the restrictor is not allowed.

Can a water pump freeze in Christchurch?

Yes. A pump in an unheated shed or with exposed pipes can freeze and crack on a hard frost. Lagging the pipes and fitting an insulated cover reduces the risk.

Do you service bore pumps?

Yes, including submersible pumps, using the right lifting equipment for deep bores.

Will a pump fix low town water pressure?

Sometimes. If the problem is a narrow or corroded supply pipe, replacing the pipe is usually the better fix.
