A plumbing fault in a business costs more than the repair. A blocked kitchen drain can close a café for the day. A failed hot water unit takes an office bathroom out of action. A backflow device that misses its annual test puts the building warrant of fitness at risk. Commercial plumbing is as much about keeping the doors open as it is about pipes.

That covers reactive call-outs, planned maintenance, compliance testing and fit-outs, with disruptive work done outside trading hours wherever we can.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Trade waste and grease traps under the 2025 bylaw

Christchurch City Council's Trade Waste Bylaw 2025 came into force on 1 July 2025, replacing the 2015 bylaw. Businesses discharging under 1,245 cubic metres a year that meet the bylaw's Schedule 1A, which covers typical cafés, restaurants, mechanics and hairdressers, can hold a permitted consent. Larger or different discharges need a conditional consent. Consents usually run one to five years and do not transfer to a new owner, so anyone buying a food business should check the trade waste consent as part of the deal.

Under the bylaw, a grease trap is a pre-treatment device. It has to be maintained and cleaned, with the waste removed by an approved operator to an authorised processing plant, and neglect can leave the owner liable for sewer damage. Grease traps designed to G13/AS2 are the accepted solution under the Building Code. We install and replace traps, clear the kitchen lines that feed them, arrange grease trap cleaning, and help you set a cleaning frequency based on how fast your trap actually fills. The council's trade waste team is on tradewaste@ccc.govt.nz or 03 941 8999.

How It Works

Set up your account and agreed rates
Site visit to note access, inductions and constraints
Respond to call-outs or carry out scheduled maintenance
Schedule disruptive work outside trading hours
Record work done, including grease and backflow servicing
Invoice to your account in a consistent format

Backflow prevention and compliance

Christchurch City Council requires commercial and industrial properties to have at least medium hazard backflow protection at the boundary as a condition of supply. The device goes on the private side of the boundary, and the owner pays for its installation, testing and maintenance. Testable devices must be tested every year, or after repairs, by an Independent Qualified Person, and the result feeds into the building warrant of fitness. If an owner does not comply, the council can install a device and charge the owner.

We install, repair and replace boundary devices, and can arrange annual backflow testing with an Independent Qualified Person, so a failed test is fixed quickly and the warrant stays current. Devices outside are lagged too, because a device left full of water through a hard frost can crack.

Working around your business

Commercial sites have constraints homes do not: health and safety inductions, tenant notice periods, building managers, and customers who should not see a plumber with a jetter in the dining room. We plan around them, carry out disruptive work early, late or on closed days where needed, and leave the site clean and ready to trade.

We work across the rebuilt central city inside the Four Avenues, the light industrial areas of Sydenham, Addington, Woolston, Hornby and Belfast, and town centres from Riccarton to Rolleston and Rangiora. Many central city buildings are post-quake builds with modern services, while older industrial sites often carry original drainage worth a camera inspection before a fit-out.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Commercial Plumbing

No re-approvals

Invoices arrive in one consistent format.

Grease trap records

We log every grease trap and grease line service and help you set a cleaning frequency based on how full your trap gets, so records are ready if the council asks.

Work outside trading hours

Disruptive jobs are scheduled for early mornings, late evenings or closed days, and the site is left ready to trade.

Compliance kept current

Backflow testing, repairs and the paperwork your building warrant of fitness relies on are handled together, so nothing lapses between contractors.

Commercial Plumbing FAQs

Does my café need a trade waste consent in Christchurch?

Most food businesses discharging to the council sewer need one under the Trade Waste Bylaw 2025. Small cafés that meet Schedule 1A can usually hold a permitted consent.

How often should a grease trap be cleaned?

The council has not set a single interval. It depends on the trap's size and how much you cook, so we help you set a schedule from how fast it fills.

Does a commercial property need a backflow device?

Yes. Christchurch City Council requires at least medium hazard protection at the boundary for commercial and industrial sites, tested every year by an Independent Qualified Person.

Can you work after hours?

Yes. We schedule disruptive work before opening, after close or on closed days wherever possible.

I am buying a food business. What should I check?

Trade waste consents do not transfer to a new owner, so you will need your own. A grease trap check and a camera look at the kitchen drains are worth doing before settlement.
