A blocked drain is the expensive way to find out a line needed cleaning. Roots, fat, scale and silt build up slowly, and the first sign is often a gurgling basin or a gully trap that overflows in heavy rain. A planned clean clears the whole line while it is still flowing, and costs less than an after-hours callout.

Cheeky's Plumbers cleans household and commercial drains across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. We run every clean to the boundary, check the result on camera, and tell you honestly whether the line needs regular attention or a repair.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Who benefits most from regular drain cleaning

Plenty of properties never need it. A modern PVC line with no trees nearby can go decades without a visit. These are the places where routine cleaning earns its keep:

  • Older bungalows and character homes with original earthenware or concrete drains
  • Sections with large trees growing close to the drain line
  • Homes that have had two or more blockages in the last few years
  • Cafés, takeaways and commercial kitchens, even with a grease trap
  • Rentals and flats with heavy or unpredictable use
  • Properties going to market, where clean footage helps the sale

What a proper drain clean involves

A clean goes further than an unblock. We work the full length of the line from the furthest fixture to the boundary, not just far enough to get water moving. Depending on what is in there, that means a rotating root cutter, a chain flail for scale and grease, or hydro jetting for silt and sludge.

Gully traps and inspection points are cleared and checked. Then we run a CCTV drain inspection along the line, so you can see the pipe wall is clean and we can spot cracks, sags or displaced joints that cleaning will not fix. You keep the footage.

Christchurch drains after the quakes

The 2010 and 2011 earthquakes caused liquefaction and ground movement across large parts of the city. On flat land the government's technical categories rate the risk of future liquefaction damage, and on TC2 and TC3 sites drains need to be flexible and well detailed. Older lines on those sites can carry joints that have opened or dropped slightly, which catch fat, paper and roots and make blockages more likely.

That is why the camera matters here. A line that blocks every year in Linwood, Burwood or New Brighton might just need cleaning, or it might have a dropped joint that will keep catching waste no matter how often it is jetted. On a gravity sewer, the property owner looks after the lateral on their land, while the council owns the main, the connection and roughly the first metre of lateral on private land. We show you where any fault sits before we recommend anything.

How often should drains be cleaned?

There is no single answer, and anyone who gives you one without looking inside the pipe is guessing. As a rule of thumb, root-affected earthenware lines often need attention about once a year, because roots grow back from the joints. Commercial kitchens can need it far more often. A household PVC line with a one-off problem might not need another clean for years.

After the first clean and camera run we tell you which group you are in. If a line needs cleaning more than once a year, a drain repair or pipe relining often becomes cheaper than ongoing maintenance, and we will show you the comparison.

Cost of drain cleaning

The final price depends on the length of the line, the number of access points, whether we need the jetter as well as the drain machine, and how heavily the pipe is packed with roots or grease.

Scheduled maintenance customers get a fixed price per visit agreed upfront, so you can budget for it like a warrant of fitness. Commercial kitchens and multi-unit sites are priced on line length and how often we visit.

Looking after your drains between cleans

Most of what ends up in a drain was put there by the people using it. Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing, fit strainers in the kitchen sink and shower, and bin wet wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products. For businesses, Christchurch City Council's Trade Waste Bylaw 2025 treats grease traps as pre-treatment that must be maintained, with the waste removed by an approved operator. A trap that is not cleaned lets fat through to your own drains first.

Outside, keep the gully trap grate clear of leaves, and make sure the surround sits above ground level so stormwater cannot run into it. If your property is on a vacuum or pressure sewer, the same habits protect the pump and valves as well as the pipes.

Drain Cleaning FAQs

What is the difference between drain cleaning and unblocking?

Unblocking clears enough of a line to get water moving again. Cleaning works the full length of the pipe to remove roots, fat and silt, then checks the result on camera so the line stays clear for longer.

How much does drain cleaning cost in Christchurch?

Longer lines, extra access points and heavy root or grease build-up add to the price, and we confirm it before starting.

Will cleaning get rid of tree roots for good?

No. Cutting clears roots from the pipe, but they grow back through the same joints. Relining or replacing the affected section is the permanent fix.

Do I need a camera inspection with a drain clean?

We include a camera check because it shows whether the line is clean and whether there is damage behind the blockage, such as a cracked pipe or a joint that moved in the quakes.

Can regular cleaning help with drain smells?

Often, yes. Smells usually come from build-up inside the line or a dry trap. If cleaning does not fix it, we look for cracks, vents and trap seals.

Should a café clean its drains even with a grease trap?

Yes. A grease trap catches most fat but not all of it, and the trap itself must be maintained under the council's trade waste rules. Kitchen lines usually need regular cleaning as well.
