Gas fires in Christchurch run on LPG, from bottles, a bulk tank or a piped LPG supply in some streets. They give instant, controllable heat with no firewood to stack, and they sit outside the Clean Air rules that limit which wood burners Christchurch homes can install and use.
We install flued LPG fires and heaters, service the ones you already have, and fix the pilot lights, ignition faults and sooty glass that stop them working when the first frost arrives.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Clean Air rules and why households look at gas
Environment Canterbury's Clean Air rules decide which solid fuel burners can be installed and used in Christchurch. On sites under 2 hectares in the Christchurch Clean Air Zone, only ultra-low emission burners can be installed. Existing low-emission burners can be used for up to 20 years from installation, then they must be replaced or fitted with an approved emission reduction device. Open fires and older-style burners cannot be used at all.
The same 20 year limit applies in Rangiora and Kaiapoi. ECan's Solid Fuel Burner Database shows your burner's age and replacement date. When a burner reaches that date, households weigh up a new ultra-low emission burner, a heat pump or a flued gas fire. We can tell you what an LPG fire would involve in your room so you can compare properly.
Types of gas heating we install
The right choice depends on the room and how you want to use it. For whole-house heat, LPG hydronic heating is another option.
- Inbuilt flued gas fires set into a wall or a new cavity
- Gas inserts for an existing fireplace with a sound chimney and a flue liner
- Freestanding flued gas fires with a visible flue through the roof or wall
- Flued wall heaters for bedrooms and smaller living areas
- Outdoor LPG fires and heaters for decks and covered patios
How It Works
Chimneys after the earthquakes
More than 15,000 chimneys were damaged or toppled in the Canterbury earthquakes, and after the quakes many were demolished, some right down to floor level. The Natural Hazards Commission still says removing an old brick chimney is the safest option, because the part above the roofline is the most hazardous.
That shapes gas fire work in Christchurch. A gas insert needs a chimney that is still there and in sound condition. Where the chimney has gone, an inbuilt or freestanding fire with its own flue through the wall or roof is usually the answer. If your home is a scheduled heritage building, the council's heritage guidance prefers chimneys to be reconstructed where possible, so check before you plan around a missing one.
Flued versus unflued heaters
A flued appliance sends its combustion products outside. An unflued appliance, like a portable LPG cabinet heater, releases them into the room. WorkSafe advises against using unflued gas appliances in small rooms, bedrooms or bathrooms, and says they should only be used in well-ventilated areas. Energywise recommends keeping a window open while one is running. Unflued heaters also add moisture to the air, which is the opposite of what a cold Christchurch house needs on a frosty night. For permanent heating we install flued appliances.
Servicing, repairs and cost
A gas fire service typically includes cleaning the burner and pilot assembly, checking ignition and the flame safety device, inspecting the flue and terminal for blockages such as birds' nests, checking the glass seal, measuring gas pressure and testing for leaks. If you see soot, a lazy yellow flame or a pilot that will not stay lit, turn the fire off and book gas appliance repairs. If you smell gas with the fire off, turn off the bottles, leave the room and call for gas leak repairs.
Installation cost depends on the appliance, the flue route, any building work around an inbuilt fire, and how far the gas line runs from the bottles or tank. A gas fire on LPG also needs enough supply to run alongside any hob or hot water, which we check. Some flue installations need building consent from the council, and we tell you upfront if yours does. Every installation is done by a registered gasfitter and certified.

Gas Fires FAQs
Do the Clean Air rules apply to gas fires?
Environment Canterbury's Clean Air rules are written for wood and other solid fuel burners. A flued gas fire is one option households consider when a burner reaches its replacement date.
Can you put a gas fire in my old fireplace?
Often, if the chimney is still standing and sound, using a gas insert and a flue liner. Many Christchurch chimneys were removed after the quakes, in which case a fire with its own flue is the answer.
Are unflued gas heaters safe?
WorkSafe says unflued gas appliances should not be used in small rooms, bedrooms or bathrooms, and only in well-ventilated spaces. For permanent heating we recommend flued appliances.
How often should a gas fire be serviced?
A regular service every year or two is sensible, and immediately if you see soot, a yellow flame or a pilot that will not stay lit.
How much does a gas fire cost in Christchurch?
Full installations depend on the appliance, flue and LPG supply, and we quote in writing after a site visit.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas fire?
We recommend one for any home with indoor gas appliances as an extra layer of safety.
