Kaiapoi is about 17 kilometres north of central Christchurch near the mouth of the Waimakariri River, and is known as the River Town after the Kaiapoi River that runs through its centre. More than 900 homes in Kaiapoi and nearby The Pines Beach were abandoned after the 2010 earthquake, and the town's water supply and sewerage were interrupted.
