More than 900 homes in Kaiapoi and nearby The Pines Beach were abandoned because of land damage from the 2010 earthquake, and large areas were condemned as residential red zone. The population dipped after the 2011 earthquakes but has since grown rapidly, and the red zone land is being reused under the Waimakariri Residential Red Zone Recovery Plan. From a single cooktop swap to a whole house run for hot water, heating and an outdoor bayonet, we size the LPG supply in Kaiapoi so every appliance gets the pressure it needs, even with everything on at once.
Kaiapoi, the River Town: gas after the red zone
Kaiapoi, about 17 kilometres north of central Christchurch near the mouth of the Waimakariri, took heavy damage in the 2010 earthquake. More than 900 homes in Kaiapoi and nearby The Pines Beach were abandoned, and large areas were red-zoned. The town has since grown quickly with new housing, while many of the older homes that stayed were repaired.
In a repaired older home, our first job is to check any existing gas pipe. Ground damage and relevelling can strain joints, so we pressure test what is there and replace rather than patch anything that fails. Where we add new pipe, flexible connections at the entry point and appliances allow for the kind of ground movement Kaiapoi has seen. Newer builds on the expanding edges are usually on engineered slabs, with gas routed through the framing.
Kaiapoi gets its River Town name from the Kaiapoi River through its centre, and the Waimakariri flooded the town in 1868, with another major flood in 1923. On sections near the river we raise the bottle base and chain the cylinders so floodwater cannot move them, and keep the regulator off the ground. The flat land also gets regular frosts in winter, so LPG bottles and regulators are chosen for cold mornings. Kaiapoi is in Waimakariri District, but gasfitting rules are national, so the certificate and testing are the same as in the city.
Local tip: If your Kaiapoi home was repaired or relevelled after 2010, have the existing gas pipe pressure tested before adding any new appliance.
