A toilet that runs all night or seeps around the base is more than an annoyance. A cistern that never quite stops filling sends a steady stream of water down the drain day and night, and a slow leak at the pan connection can rot a timber floor long before anyone notices.
We repair and replace toilets in homes and businesses across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. Most cistern faults are fixed in one visit with parts from the van. When a toilet is cracked, worn out or simply past it, we supply and fit a new one and take the old suite away.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

A running toilet and the excess water charge
Most Christchurch households do not pay for every litre they use. Since October 2022, Christchurch City Council has charged households extra only for water used above a daily allowance of 700 litres on average, and the council's figures put median use for a single home at about 470 litres a day. A cistern that trickles around the clock, or one that sticks open, can be enough to push a household over that line without anyone changing their habits.
If that happens, the council offers a remission of the excess water charge for a leak, on proof the leak was repaired promptly. Our dated invoice shows what we found and fixed. The council's water supply bylaw also treats fittings that waste water as a breach, and it can issue a notice requiring repairs. In Selwyn the picture is different again: most homes on council supplies in Rolleston and Lincoln are metered and pay for every cubic metre, so a running toilet costs money from day one.
How It Works
What usually goes wrong
Inside the cistern there are two main parts: the inlet valve that refills it, and the outlet or flush valve that releases water into the pan. Worn outlet seals cause the silent trickle into the bowl that keeps the cistern topping up. A tired inlet valve can overfill and spill into the overflow. Both are standard replacement parts, and we carry the common types.
Leaks at the base usually come from a failed pan connector or seal where the pan meets the waste pipe, or from loose fixings that let the pan move. We lift the pan, replace the seal or connector and refix it solidly. A wobbly pan on a timber floor sometimes reveals soft, water-damaged boards underneath, and we show you if we find them.
Replacing a toilet
When the pan is cracked, parts are no longer made, or the room is being redone as part of a bathroom renovation, a new toilet is the better spend. We help you choose a suite that suits the existing waste position (an S-trap through the floor or a P-trap into the wall), the space and the look you want. Back-to-wall and wall-hung toilets look tidy but need more planning. Every toilet sold in New Zealand must carry a Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (WELS) star rating showing its litres per flush, which makes comparing suites simple.
What it costs
Cistern parts are at the lower end. Replacing a whole suite, moving the waste outlet, converting to wall-hung or repairing a rotten floor costs more, and we quote that before we start.
Toilets in Christchurch homes
Older bungalows in suburbs such as St Albans and Beckenham can still have high-level or early low-level cisterns with parts that are hard to find, and older earthenware drains below the floor. Homes from the 1960s and 1970s, common in Bishopdale and Redwood, often have single-flush toilets that use far more water than a modern dual flush. If the toilet is on a pressure sewer, keep wipes and sanitary items out of it: they are hard on the pump in the tank. If the problem is a blocked toilet rather than a leak, the cause may be further down, and a CCTV drain inspection shows where.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Toilet Repairs
Common parts on the van
Inlet valves, outlet valves, seals and pan connectors for the common cistern types are on the van, so most repairs are done in one visit.
A dated invoice for any remission
If a running cistern has triggered an excess water charge, our dated invoice records the fault and the repair for your remission application.
Water-efficient replacements
When we replace a toilet, we point you to a well-rated dual-flush suite by its WELS star rating, the biggest water saving in older homes.
Floor damage shown, not hidden
If a leaking pan has softened the floor, we show you before the pan goes back down and price the repair.
Old suite taken away
New toilets are fitted, leak tested and the old suite removed, with the price agreed first.
Toilet Repairs FAQs
Why does my toilet keep running?
Usually a worn outlet seal lets water trickle into the bowl, or the inlet valve is overfilling into the overflow. Both are standard parts we replace.
How much does a toilet repair cost in Christchurch?
We confirm the price before we start.
Can a running toilet push up my water bill in Christchurch?
It can. Christchurch households pay extra for water used above a daily allowance, and a constantly running cistern can tip a home over it. Fix it promptly and keep the invoice in case you need a remission.
Why is water leaking around the base of my toilet?
Often a failed pan connector or seal, or loose fixings. Left alone it can damage the floor, so get it checked.
Can you install a wall-hung toilet?
Yes. It needs an in-wall frame and cistern, so it is easiest during a renovation, but it can be retrofitted.
What does the WELS star rating mean?
It shows how water efficient the toilet is and its litres per flush. More stars means less water used.
