Most plumbing emergencies in Christchurch arrive on the worst possible night. A pipe splits under the floor after a hard frost, the hot water cylinder lets go in the hallway cupboard, or the shower starts filling with wastewater from below. The two things that matter straight away are stopping the water and getting a qualified plumber to the door.

We answer emergency calls across the city and out to Selwyn and Waimakariri, from Rangiora and Kaiapoi down to Rolleston and Lincoln, and over the hill to Lyttelton. You pay for the repair, and you agree that price before any tools come out.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Emergency Plumber Jobs We Handle Across Christchurch

  • 24 hour emergency plumber
  • After hours plumber
  • Burst pipe call-outs
  • Overflowing toilet
  • No water at all
  • Sewage backing up

Is it an emergency or can it wait?

A slow drip under a basin can wait for a booked visit. Water going somewhere it should not, from burst pipes to a cistern overflowing onto the floor, cannot. Call us straight away for any of these:

  • Water dripping through a ceiling, light fitting or wall lining
  • Wastewater rising in a shower, bath or outside gully trap
  • A cylinder leaking from the base or the relief valve pouring constantly
  • A pressure sewer tank alarm that will not clear
  • A smell of LPG near a hob, heater or gas water heater (get outside first, then call)

First five minutes: getting the water off

Find the toby. In most Christchurch properties it is in a small connection box near the front boundary, often with the council water meter inside. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops. Christchurch City Council owns that box, the valve and the meter, but the pipe from the boundary into the house is yours, so a leak on the house side is a job for a registered plumber.

If the water is near power points or light fittings, switch that circuit off at the switchboard. Move valuables, take photos for the insurer and get towels down. If water is bubbling up in the street or the footpath before your boundary, that is the council's pipe: call Christchurch City Council on 03 941 8999 instead. We will tell you on the phone if it sounds like theirs.

Frozen and split pipes in a Christchurch winter

Christchurch averages around 80 ground frost days a year, and when the temperature drops well below zero, exposed pipes freeze. In July 2015 the council took more than 100 calls about frozen pipes after a minus 5 morning. A frozen pipe on its own is not an emergency. The danger comes when the ice splits the pipe and it thaws, usually mid-morning, and starts pouring.

If a tap gives nothing on a frosty morning, leave it closed, keep any flame away from the pipe, and let it thaw slowly. If you find a split, turn off the toby and call us. Once it is fixed, we can lag the exposed runs, as Master Plumbers advises, so it does not happen again next July.

How we handle the call

A person answers, not a voicemail. We ask a few quick questions, talk you through isolating the water or the LPG, and send the nearest available plumber. You get their name and an arrival estimate by text.

On site, the first job is making it safe: stop the water, protect the area and check nothing electrical is at risk. If the leak is hidden in a wall, a slab or under a repaired floor, we use leak detection gear before cutting in. Then we find the cause and give you a fixed price for the repair. If the permanent fix needs a part we do not carry, we make a temporary repair so you have water overnight.

What affects the cost

The repair price depends on what we find, and you hear it before we start. The main things that move it:

  • Time of day: nights and public holidays carry an after-hours rate, which we tell you on the phone
  • Access: a pipe under a timber floor is quicker to reach than one in a concrete slab or behind tiles
  • Parts: a flexi hose or valve is on the van, a full cylinder may not be
  • Whether a temporary fix tonight and a permanent one tomorrow makes sense

Christchurch emergencies we are called to

Older bungalows in Beckenham, Fendalton and St Albans often still have original pipework under suspended floors, where frost and age catch up with it. Tens of thousands of Christchurch homes went through earthquake repairs, and pipes that were cut, rejoined or rerouted during that work are worth checking whenever a leak appears. Newer homes in Halswell, Wigram and Rolleston tend to fail at flexi hoses and push-fit joints in tight cupboards.

Some properties, especially in the east and in newer subdivisions, are on a pressure or vacuum sewer rather than a gravity drain. If a pressure tank alarm sounds, keep water use to a minimum: the tank has some spare storage, but not unlimited. Council-installed tanks are maintained by the council, while privately owned systems need a plumber or drainlayer, and we can tell you which you have. Where wastewater is backing up into a gravity drain, we clear the blocked drains and find out what caused it.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Emergency Plumber

A person answers, 24/7

Real people pick up day and night, talk you through turning off the water or the LPG, and text you the name of the plumber on the way.

Fixed price, even after hours

We diagnose, then fix the price. For a hidden leak, such as one inside a slab, we price the finding stage first and quote the repair once we can see it.

Frost-proofed once it is fixed

After a frozen or split pipe, we can lag the exposed runs under the floor, in the roof space and outside so the same pipe does not let go next winter.

Paperwork for the insurer and the council

You get photos and a written report for your insurer, and a dated invoice that proves the leak was repaired promptly if you need it for an excess water charge remission.

Emergency Plumber FAQs

Is it more expensive at night or on a public holiday?

There is an after-hours rate. We tell you what it is on the phone before we send anyone, so the invoice holds no surprises.

Where is my toby and how do I turn it off?

Usually in a small box near the front boundary, often with the water meter. Turn the valve clockwise. If it is seized or you cannot find it, call us and we will talk you through other options.

The leak is at the toby. Is that my problem?

Christchurch City Council owns the connection box, its valves and the meter, and the pipe up to your boundary. The supply pipe from the boundary into the house is yours. If the leak is in the box or on the street side, report it to the council.

My pipes froze overnight. What should I do?

Leave the tap closed and let the pipe thaw gradually, and never use a naked flame on it. If you find a split or water appears as it thaws, turn off the toby and call us.

Can I just use a handyman in an emergency?

Sanitary plumbing is restricted work in New Zealand and must be done by someone authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. Unlicensed work can also put your insurance at risk.
