Losing hot water is bad enough at any time, but on a Christchurch winter morning it is miserable. Most faults come down to a handful of parts: an element, a thermostat, a valve or, on LPG systems, the burner and ignition.
We diagnose the fault, carry the common parts, and tell you whether your cylinder is worth repairing or is close to the end of its life.

- Thermostat replacement
- Relief valve dripping
- Lukewarm water
- Leaking cylinder
Signs your hot water system needs a repair
Some symptoms point to a cheap part. Others say the tank itself is failing. These are the ones to watch for:
- No hot water at all, or hot water that runs out much sooner than it used to
- Lukewarm water even after the cylinder has had time to heat
- Water dripping from the relief valve pipe outside, all day
- Water pooling under the cylinder or rust at the base
- Rumbling, banging or hissing from the cylinder
- An error code on a continuous flow LPG unit
What we repair
Many of our hot water calls are about valves. On a mains pressure cylinder, heated water expands, and the expansion control valve on the cold side lets that small volume out to keep the pressure safe. The temperature and pressure relief valve is the backup. When either drips constantly it is wasting water and telling you something has changed, often a worn valve seat or higher incoming pressure.
We also replace elements and thermostats on electric cylinders, with the electrical side done by a registered electrician where the work requires it, along with tempering valves that have stuck or drifted, pressure limiting valves and leaking unions. Gas in Christchurch means LPG, so every gas water heater here runs on bottles, a bulk tank or a piped LPG supply. We repair burners, thermocouples and ignition parts on LPG storage heaters and read the error codes on continuous flow units.
How It Works
Frost and Christchurch hot water faults
Master Plumbers warns that freezing can split pipes, fittings and hot water cylinders. In Christchurch, with around 80 ground frost days a year, the parts most at risk are outdoor pipework to the cylinder, relief valve drains on outside walls and outdoor continuous flow units. Many outdoor units have built-in frost protection that needs power to work, so if the power has been off overnight in a hard frost, check the unit before you assume it has failed.
Ripple control is another Christchurch quirk. Orion's busiest times are very cold winter mornings and evenings, and the network can use ripple control to switch hot water cylinders off for periods at peak times. If your hot water only drops out at certain times of day, that is worth ruling out before replacing parts.
Repair or replace: how we decide with you
Consumer NZ puts the life of a hot water cylinder at around 10 to 15 years, and treats failure at about five years as premature. We use that as a rough guide, not a rule. An older low pressure copper cylinder in a Beckenham bungalow or a St Albans cottage can keep going for years with a new valve or element. A steel mains pressure tank that is weeping from the shell cannot be patched.
If the repair is a valve, element or thermostat and the tank is sound, we fix it. If the tank is leaking or badly corroded, or the repair would cost a large share of a new unit, we show you why and give you a written quote for new hot water cylinders. We confirm the price before we start.
Christchurch homes and their common faults
The housing stock shapes the work. Older bungalows often still have a low pressure cylinder fed from a header tank in the roof, where the tank and the pipes to it sit in a cold roof space. Houses rebuilt after the earthquakes have newer systems, but the first of them are now well over a decade old. In newer subdivisions such as Halswell, Rolleston and Lincoln the tanks are younger, so the faults we find are more often valves and controls.
Regular hot water servicing, such as checking the valves and draining off sediment, catches a lot of these problems before they leave you without hot water.
Safety comes first
Hot water systems store a lot of energy. Never cap or block a dripping relief or expansion valve, because that pipe stops the cylinder over-pressurising. If water is coming through a ceiling, turn the cylinder off at the switchboard and the water off at the cold valve. If you smell gas near an LPG water heater, turn the gas off at the bottles or tank, keep flames and switches away, and call for gas leak repairs. Every gas repair is done by a certifying gasfitter and comes with the paperwork the law requires.

Hot Water Cylinder Repairs FAQs
Why is water dripping from the pipe outside my house?
That is usually the relief or expansion valve drain. A constant drip often means a worn valve or high incoming pressure. Do not block it. Book a repair.
How much does a hot water repair cost in Christchurch?
The final price depends on the part and access, and we confirm it before any work begins.
Can a hot water cylinder freeze?
Yes. Master Plumbers warns that freezing can split cylinders as well as pipes. Outdoor pipework and units are most at risk on hard frosts, so lagging matters.
Why does my hot water run out in the evening?
It may be an element or thermostat fault, an undersized cylinder, or ripple control switching the cylinder off at peak times. We check each before replacing anything.
Can you repair gas hot water in Christchurch?
Yes. Gas water heating here runs on LPG, and our certifying gasfitters repair LPG storage heaters and continuous flow units.
Is it worth repairing an old hot water cylinder?
Often, if the tank is sound and the fault is a valve, element or thermostat. If the tank leaks, replacement is the only safe fix.
