Christchurch is dry by New Zealand standards, with around 618 mm of rain a year at the airport, so spouting often gets ignored until a southerly storm or a long wet spell shows what is wrong. Water pours over the front edge, drips from the joints, or finds its way inside below the eaves. Add frost, the odd snowfall and a strong nor'wester, and spouting here has a harder life than the rainfall figure suggests.
Cheeky's Plumbers repairs and replaces spouting, downpipes and flashings on homes and small commercial buildings across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. We photograph what we find, show you before we start, and make sure every downpipe ends up where it should.

Signs your spouting needs attention
Problems are easiest to spot in heavy rain. Look for:
- Water spilling over the front edge instead of running to the downpipe
- Drips or streaks at joints, corners and end caps
- Spouting sagging away from the fascia or holding water
- Rust spots or holes along older steel spouting
- Damp patches on ceilings or walls below the eaves
- Downpipes loose, split or discharging onto the ground
Repair or replace?
Many spouting problems are fixable. Blocked outlets can be cleared, sagging runs re-bracketed to the right fall, and leaking joints resealed. If one length is rusted through or cracked, we can replace just that section and match the profile.
Replacement makes more sense when steel spouting is rusting along its whole length, when old PVC has gone brittle and cracks at every joint, or when the spouting was never sized for the roof area it drains. We check the basics first: enough fall towards each outlet, enough downpipes for the roof, and brackets close enough together to carry the weight of water, leaves and, in a cold snap, ice. If you plan to add rainwater tanks, we size the downpipes to feed them.
How It Works
Flashings, chimneys and roof penetrations
Flashings seal the gaps where a roof meets walls, chimneys, skylights and pipes. Over time sealant cracks, fixings work loose and older flashings corrode. Leaks around flues, vent pipes and old solar water heater connections are common.
Christchurch has its own version of this problem. More than 15,000 chimneys were damaged or toppled in the Canterbury earthquakes, and council heritage guidance notes that some were demolished to floor level. Where a chimney has been removed, the roof is patched over the old opening, and those patches and the flashings around them are worth checking. We inspect from the roof, photograph what we find, and replace failed pipe boots, re-dress or renew flashings and reseal penetrations with products that suit your roofing. When water shows inside and the source is not obvious, our leak detection gear helps trace it.
Christchurch conditions that are hard on spouting
Wind is the big one. The nor'wester is a hot, dry wind that can reach storm force, and it is often followed by a southerly that brings cold rain and, now and then, snow to the plains. Loose brackets and poorly fixed downpipes are the first things to go. With around 80 ground frost days a year, water left sitting in sagging spouting can freeze overnight, which loads the brackets and stresses the joints.
Leaves are the other. Hillside streets in Cashmere and around the Port Hills, and established gardens in Fendalton and Merivale, fill spouting quickly in autumn. Near the coast in New Brighton and Sumner, sea spray shortens the life of steel spouting and fixings, so material choice matters there.
After the quakes, engineering reports recommended replacing heavy concrete tile roofs with lightweight materials such as steel. If your roof has been changed, or you are planning it, the spouting and flashings should be checked and matched to the new roof at the same time.
Downpipes and stormwater
Every downpipe should run into the stormwater system, not onto the ground beside the house. Water dumped at the foot of a wall soaks the ground under the floor and can find its way into a subfloor or under a slab. It must never be connected to a gully trap or the wastewater drain either, because that sends rainwater into the sewer.
We check each downpipe connection while we are on site, clear blocked downpipes and sumps, and repair or relay broken stormwater pipe at ground level where needed.
What affects the cost
The price depends on:
- Height and access: single storey eaves versus two or three storeys
- Roof pitch, and whether scaffolding or edge protection is needed
- Length of spouting to repair or replace, and the material chosen
- Number of downpipes and stormwater connections involved
- Flashing work around chimneys, old chimney patches and skylights

Gutter Repairs FAQs
Do you clean spouting?
Yes, as part of a repair or on its own. Cleaning before winter clears the leaves that cause overflows and stops water sitting in the spouting overnight.
What spouting materials do you install?
PVC and pre-painted steel in common profiles. Near the coast we talk through which materials and fixings suit sea spray before you choose.
Can you fix a leaking roof?
We fix leaks from flashings, pipe boots, penetrations, spouting and old chimney patches. Full re-roofing or major roof repairs are a job for a roofer.
Why does my spouting overflow even when it is clean?
Usually the fall is wrong, there are too few downpipes for the roof area, or an outlet or downpipe is partly blocked further down. We check all three.
Can frost damage spouting?
Water left sitting in sagging spouting can freeze on a frosty night, adding weight to the brackets and stress on the joints. Fixing the fall so it drains fully helps.
Is roof work safe in wet or windy weather?
We do not work on roofs in unsafe conditions. In a nor'wester or heavy rain we make things temporarily safe and come back when it is calm.
