Gasfitting is restricted work in New Zealand. Only people authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) may do it, and for good reason: a poor joint or an undersized pipe can mean a leak, a fire or carbon monoxide inside the house.
Our certifying gasfitters handle residential and light commercial LPG work across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. Whether you are adding a gas cooktop, running a line to an outdoor fire, setting up a new bottle station or moving appliances in a renovation, we plan the job, do it to the standard and leave you with the gas certificate.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

How Christchurch homes get their gas
There is no natural gas network in the South Island, so gas in Canterbury means LPG. Christchurch had a coal gas network from the gasworks that began in 1864 and reached all but the outer suburbs, but it stopped operating in the early 1980s. Older houses sometimes still have redundant pipe from those days in a wall or under the floor; if you find some during a renovation, we check it is disconnected and make it safe rather than reusing it.
Today a home gets its LPG in one of three ways:
- Two LPG bottles with an automatic changeover valve, the most common setup
- A bulk LPG tank, which suits homes running several gas appliances or a boiler
- A piped LPG network in some Christchurch streets, run by Rockgas and fed from LPG storage at Woolston, which arrives by pipeline from Lyttelton Port
Gas fitting work we do
If an existing appliance has stopped working, that is a gas appliance repair, and a smell of gas is a job for gas leak repairs. New work usually looks like this:
- New gas pipework from bottles, a bulk tank or a piped LPG connection to appliances
- Connecting cooktops, ovens, gas fires, heaters and water heaters
- LPG bottle stations, regulators and automatic changeover valves
- Extending or moving gas lines during kitchen and bathroom renovations
- Outdoor gas: barbecue bayonet points, patio heaters and outdoor fires
- Capping off and making safe appliances and old pipe you no longer use
- Pressure testing and safety checks when buying or selling a home
How It Works
Why a certified gasfitter matters
Every gasfitting job in New Zealand needs a gas certificate, and the person doing it must hold a current PGDB licence. You can check a gasfitter on the public register at pgdb.co.nz and ask to see the licence card they must carry. Licences are renewed every year, so last year's card is not enough.
A certified gasfitter protects you three ways: the work is done to the standard, there is a record of it for your insurer and any future buyer, and if something is wrong there is an accountable professional and a regulator behind them. WorkSafe's consumer guidance sets out what to expect.
Sizing the supply for LPG and frosty mornings
A gas line has to be big enough for every appliance that might run at the same time. Add a continuous flow water heater and a six-burner cooktop to a pipe sized for an old oven, and everything is starved of gas when it all runs together. LPG adds a local twist: bottles deliver vapour less freely when it is very cold, and Christchurch averages about 80 ground frost days a year. A bottle setup that copes on a mild afternoon can struggle at 7am in July with the hot water, heater and cooktop all on.
We work out the total load, pipe length, regulator and bottle or tank arrangement before we quote, so the system works properly from day one and has room for what you might add later, such as gas heating.
Bottle placement and earthquake sense
Where LPG bottles go is set by the standards, with clearances from windows, doors, drains and ignition sources. We place them so they are safe, tidy, secured against falling and easy for the delivery driver to swap. Many Christchurch bungalows sit on suspended timber floors, which makes running new pipe underneath straightforward; slab homes in newer subdivisions such as Rolleston and Halswell usually mean routing through walls or ceilings instead.
After the earthquakes most Christchurch households know where to turn the water off. The gas matters just as much. We make sure every appliance has an isolation valve you can reach and show you how to shut the gas off at the bottles or tank.
What affects the price
The final price depends on the length and route of new pipework, access under floors or through walls, the number of appliances, whether you are on bottles, a bulk tank or piped LPG, and any new regulators, changeover valves or bottle stations. Anything beyond a simple connection is quoted in writing first.
