Gas appliances tend to fail in a few predictable ways: the spark stops reaching the burner, the safety device that proves a flame is present wears out, a jet or burner port clogs, or a regulator drifts off its set pressure. Each shows up differently, and a good repair starts by working out which one it is rather than swapping parts until something works.

We repair gas hobs, ovens, califonts and continuous flow heaters, gas fires and heaters, and outdoor BBQ connections across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. Every repair is done by a licensed gasfitter, tested before we leave and certified as the regulations require.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Gas in Christchurch means LPG

Every gas appliance we work on in Christchurch runs on LPG, because LPG is the gas supply right across the South Island. Most homes use bottles or a bulk tank, and some Christchurch streets have a piped LPG supply fed from storage at Woolston. Christchurch did once have a coal-gas network from the old gasworks, but that closed in the early 1980s.

LPG appliances are set up for LPG jets and pressures, and the regulator at the bottle or tank is part of the system. When a burner starts behaving badly, we check the supply side as well as the appliance, because a tired regulator or a kinked hose can look a lot like a faulty hob.

Common faults we fix

These are the most common call-outs:

  • Hob burners that click but will not light, or only light with a match
  • Burners that light, then go out when you let go of the knob
  • Pilot lights on gas fires and older water heaters that will not stay lit
  • Ovens that will not hold temperature or shut down mid-bake
  • Califonts and continuous flow units showing an ignition or flame error code
  • Weak, uneven or lifting flames after a bottle change
  • BBQ bayonet points that leak, stick or will not take the hose

How It Works

Describe the appliance, brand and what it is doing
Gasfitter tests ignition, flame safety device and LPG supply pressure
Fixed price agreed before any parts are fitted
Repair completed and every burner or pilot tested
Leak and combustion check, then gas certification issued

Ignition, thermocouples and flame failure devices

When a burner clicks and does not light, the cause is usually a worn or wet igniter, a cracked electrode, a faulty spark generator or a burner cap sitting off-centre. When it lights and then drops out, the suspect is the flame safety device. On many hobs, ovens and fires this is a thermocouple, a small probe that sits in the flame and holds the gas valve open only while it stays hot. Thermocouples weaken with age and dirt, and once they cannot prove the flame, the appliance cuts the gas, which is exactly what it is designed to do.

We test the parts rather than guess, replace them with genuine or approved equivalents, and check the gas pressure at the appliance so a new part is not hiding a supply problem.

Yellow flames, soot and carbon monoxide

WorkSafe lists a yellow flame instead of a blue one, soot in or around the appliance, and a smell like car exhaust as signs that an appliance is not working properly or its flue is blocked. Some flame-effect fires are designed to burn yellow, so it is the change from normal that matters. WorkSafe also warns about light back, where the flame burns inside the burner, with roaring noises, odd smells or the flame vanishing from the burner surface.

Any of these can mean carbon monoxide, which causes headaches, nausea, dizziness and tiredness and can kill at high levels. On a frosty Christchurch night, with the windows shut, a heater that is burning badly deserves attention straight away. Turn it off, ventilate the room and book a repair. If you smell raw gas rather than exhaust, treat it as a leak and see our gas leak repairs page for what to do first.

Who is allowed to repair gas appliances

Under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006, gasfitting must be done by a person authorised by the PGDB. WorkSafe says this covers pipework, appliances and flues, plus any additions or alterations, and advises asking to see the gasfitter's current practising licence card. Once the work is connected, a Gas Safety Certificate must be issued within 20 working days to confirm the installation is safe to use.

Wiping a burner cap is fine; anything that opens the gas side is gasfitting. Our gasfitters carry their licence cards and leave the certificates with you. A good hob or fire with a failed thermocouple or igniter is almost always worth repairing. Replacement makes more sense when parts are no longer made, the burner body is corroded, the heater is an old unflued type or it keeps failing. We give you both prices where it is a close call, and new appliances are covered on our gas cooktops and ovens page.

What affects the cost

The price depends on the appliance and brand, the part needed and whether we carry it on the van or have to order it, how easy the appliance is to reach, and whether the regulator, hose or supply pipe also needs work. WorkSafe recommends flame-effect heaters and LPG cabinet heaters are serviced every year, and other space and water heaters at least every two years. Autumn, before the first hard frosts, is the sensible time, and if a service is overdue we can do it on the same visit.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Gas Appliance Repairs

Diagnose before replacing parts

We test igniters, thermocouples and gas pressure first, so you pay for the part that is actually faulty.

LPG systems end to end

We check the bottle or tank regulator, hoses and supply pipe as well as the appliance, because a supply fault can look like an appliance fault.

Licensed, carded gasfitters

Every repair is done by a PGDB-authorised gasfitter who can show a current licence card and issues the required gas certification.

Carbon monoxide checked

We look at flame quality, flues and ventilation on every appliance we repair, not just the part you called about.

Gas Appliance Repairs FAQs

Why does my gas hob click but not light?

Usually a dirty or wet igniter, a misplaced burner cap, a cracked electrode or a weak spark module. If it lights with a match but not the igniter, the gas side is probably fine.

Why does my burner go out when I let go of the knob?

That points to the flame failure device, often a thermocouple, which shuts the gas when it cannot sense a flame. It is a common and fairly quick repair.

What gas do Christchurch homes use?

LPG, from bottles, a bulk tank or, on some streets, a piped LPG supply. We repair appliances on all of these.

Is a yellow flame dangerous?

On a hob, oven or water heater it can mean poor combustion and carbon monoxide. Turn it off and have it checked. Some decorative fires are meant to burn yellow.

Can I repair a gas appliance myself?

No. Any work on the gas side must be done by a gasfitter authorised by the PGDB, and it must be certified.

Can you fix my outdoor BBQ gas point?

Yes. We repair or replace leaking and sticky bayonet fittings and test the connection for leaks.
