One leak is a repair job. A leak in the laundry in autumn, another under the bathroom in winter and brown water every time you come home from holiday is a pattern, and patching it one burst pipe repair at a time gets expensive. That pattern usually means the pipe has reached the end of its working life.
We repipe Christchurch homes and small commercial buildings, either the whole system or only the sections that are failing. Every job starts with a free inspection under the floor and in the ceiling, and you get a written, fixed quote before you decide anything.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Signs your Christchurch home needs repiping
No one symptom proves the whole system is finished, but two or three of these together usually do. If you are seeing them, book an inspection before the next frost finds the weak spot for you.
- Leaks in different rooms over the last year or two
- Rusty or discoloured water first thing in the morning
- Weak flow at every tap, not just one fixture
- Grey steel pipe with threaded joints under the house
- Grey or black plastic pipe with crimped rings, typical of polybutylene
- Pipes that split or froze on a cold night more than once
Old pipe in Christchurch houses
Galvanised iron pipe with screwed fittings was standard in older New Zealand homes before copper took over. It rusts from the inside, so the bore narrows and eventually rusts through. That is why many bungalows from the first half of last century have both poor pressure and pinhole leaks, and why low water pressure is often the first thing owners notice.
Polybutylene was used widely from the 1970s onwards. Build magazine makes the point that old polybutylene will not necessarily fail and suggests a staged approach: replace the accessible runs in the roof space and subfloor first, then deal with concealed wall runs when you next redecorate. For many 1970s and 1980s homes in suburbs like Bishopdale and Redwood, that is the most cost-effective path.
Christchurch adds two local factors. The city averages around 80 ground frost days a year, and frozen water can split pipes and fittings that are already weak. Many homes have also been through earthquake repairs since 2010 and 2011, so we look closely at how pipes were reconnected under floors that have been relevelled or rebuilt.
How It Works
Frost, frozen pipes and new pipe
Cold snaps are a real repiping trigger here. In July 2015 the council took more than 100 calls about frozen pipes after temperatures dropped to minus 5, and in July 2026 Christchurch recorded a low of minus 4.6. Master Plumbers warns that freezing can split pipes, fittings and hot water cylinders, and recommends lagging pipes outside, in garages, roof spaces and under floors.
When we repipe, we route new pipe away from exposed outside walls where we can, and lag the runs that have to sit in a cold subfloor, garage or ceiling. On older houses with open, draughty subfloors this matters as much as the pipe material itself. If a frozen pipe has already split, our burst pipes team can make the house safe first and we plan the repipe from there.
Whole-house or partial repipe
A whole-house repipe replaces the supply from the boundary to every fixture, hot and cold. It suits homes with galvanised pipe throughout or failures in several places. A partial repipe targets the worst sections, such as the subfloor runs, the hot lines from the cylinder or the supply pipe from the boundary.
That supply pipe is your responsibility. Christchurch City Council owns the toby or meter box and the pipe on the road side, but the point of supply is the boundary, so the pipe from the boundary into the house belongs to the owner. If that line is old or leaking, our water main repairs service can replace it as part of the job. We use PEX or copper, chosen to suit the house and your budget, and run it through the subfloor or ceiling so wall openings stay small.
What affects the cost of a repipe
Every repipe is quoted free after an inspection, because no two houses are the same. The main cost drivers are:
- Size of the house and the number of bathrooms, kitchens and laundries
- Floor type: a suspended timber floor is far easier than a concrete slab
- Ceiling access in two-storey homes and skillion roofs
- Whether the supply pipe from the boundary is included
- Lagging needed for exposed runs in cold subfloors and garages
- Making good, such as plastering and painting access points
Living through a repipe
Most households stay at home while we work. We plan each day so the water is back on by evening, protect floors and furniture, and keep dust down when we open walls. The new system is pressure tested before anything is closed up.
There is a water bill angle too. Christchurch households pay extra for water use above a daily allowance, and a hidden leak can push you over it. The council offers a remission for leaks on proof the leak was repaired promptly, and our invoice is that proof. Where the work needs a building consent and Code Compliance Certificate, we handle the paperwork with Christchurch City Council, Selwyn District Council or Waimakariri District Council.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Repiping
Inspection before any quote
We check pipe type, condition and pressure under the floor and in the ceiling before recommending a whole or partial repipe. The written price is agreed before work starts.
Lagged for Christchurch winters
New pipe in cold subfloors, garages and roof spaces is lagged, and we keep runs off exposed outside walls where the layout allows.
Staged repiping where it fits
In polybutylene homes we can replace the roof space and subfloor runs first and leave concealed wall runs until you renovate.
Water back on each night
We plan the job so you have running water at the end of each day, and pressure test the whole system before closing up.
Records for sale and insurance
You get a record of what was installed and where, consent paperwork where needed.
Repiping FAQs
How do I know what pipe my house has?
Look under the house or in the ceiling near the cylinder. Grey steel with threaded joints is galvanised. Grey or black plastic with crimped rings is often polybutylene. We confirm it during a free inspection.
How long does a repipe take?
A typical three-bedroom Christchurch home takes two to four days, depending on access. You get a timeline with the quote.
Can I stay in the house during the work?
Yes. We restore water at the end of each working day.
Will new pipe stop my pipes freezing?
New pipe is stronger than corroded pipe, but any water pipe can freeze. We lag exposed runs and route pipe away from cold outside walls where we can, which is what Master Plumbers recommends.
Who owns the pipe from the street?
In Christchurch the council owns the pipe up to the boundary and the toby or meter box. The supply pipe from the boundary into the house is the owner's to maintain.
Do I need a building consent to repipe?
Some plumbing work needs consent and some is exempt. We check your job and handle any consent with your council.
