Cooking on gas in Christchurch means cooking on LPG. Most homes run their hob from a pair of bottles or a bulk tank outside, and some streets have piped LPG. The appliance, the regulator and the pipe all have to suit LPG, and the supply has to keep up with everything else on the same bottles, such as a continuous flow water heater or a gas fire.

Cheeky's Plumbers installs gas hobs, cooktops and ovens across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. Our licensed gasfitters connect the appliance, test it, and leave you with the certification the law requires for gasfitting work.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Getting the details right on LPG

Every gas appliance is built for a specific gas type and pressure. A hob set up for a different gas type will not burn properly on LPG, and appliances bought online, second hand or brought from elsewhere in the country are sometimes set up for the wrong gas. Where the maker supplies an LPG conversion kit, we fit it and set the burner pressures; where it does not, the appliance should not be used on LPG. Check the label or ask us before you buy.

Clearances to rangehoods, overhead cupboards and side walls must follow the manufacturer's instructions and the gas standards, or the heat will damage the cabinetry. We light every burner, check the flames, test the flame failure devices that shut the gas off if a flame goes out, and leak test the connection. If you ever smell gas near a cooker, turn it off at the isolation valve or the bottles and call us for gas leak repairs.

Bottles, bulk tanks and piped LPG

LPG reaches Christchurch through Lyttelton Port and is piped to storage at Woolston, which also feeds the piped LPG networks in parts of the city. If your street is on piped LPG, the supply works much like a mains connection. Most homes in suburbs from Papanui to Halswell, and in Rolleston, Lincoln, Rangiora and Kaiapoi, run from bottles or a bulk tank instead.

A big six-burner cooker needs a supply that can keep up when every burner is on, especially when the bottles are cold on a frosty winter evening. If you are adding a cooker to a home that already has LPG hot water or heating, we check the regulator and pipe size can supply everything at once. New gas supplies and longer pipe runs are covered under our gas fitting service.

Ventilation and rangehoods

Burning gas produces combustion products and moisture, so extraction matters more over a gas hob than over induction. A rangehood that vents outside does a better job than a recirculating one, and that matters in a Christchurch winter when windows stay shut. If you are renovating, plan the rangehood duct route and the kitchen plumbing at the same time as the gas point. We advise on the gas side and the clearances, and work with your electrician or kitchen installer on the rest.

Christchurch kitchens

In older bungalows with suspended timber floors, the gas pipe usually comes up through the floor, which makes moving the point fairly simple. Many homes repaired or rebuilt after the earthquakes sit on concrete slabs, and on TC2 and TC3 land those slabs are often enhanced or engineered foundations that should not be cut casually. Moving a gas point there usually means running pipe through a wall or ceiling instead.

Some apartment and townhouse complexes restrict gas or bottle storage, so check your body corporate rules before buying a gas cooker. Bottles have to be sited outside in line with the LPG installation rules, and we check the setup before we connect anything.

Price guide

A straight swap on an existing LPG point sits at the lower end. Jobs that need new pipe, a moved gas point, a larger supply for a high-output cooker or a conversion kit cost more, and we quote those in writing first. Faulty burners, igniters and oven thermostats on an existing appliance are covered under gas appliance repairs.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Gas Cooktops & Ovens

Certified on the day

Licensed gasfitters do the work and you get the gas certification the law requires once the appliance is tested.

Set up for LPG

We check the appliance suits LPG, fit the maker's conversion kit if needed and set the burner pressures.

Supply checked for the load

We make sure your bottles, regulator and pipe can run the cooker alongside your other gas appliances.

Anti-tilt bracket fitted

Freestanding cookers are secured with the maker's bracket so they cannot tip forward with a pot on top.

Gas Cooktops & Ovens FAQs

Can I install a gas hob myself?

No. Gasfitting is restricted work in New Zealand and must be done by a licensed gasfitter, who certifies it. It is not a DIY job.

How much does it cost to install a gas hob in Christchurch?

New pipe, a moved point or a conversion kit add to the price, and we quote in writing first.

Can a cooktop made for another gas type run on LPG?

Only if the maker supplies an LPG conversion kit for that model. We fit the kit and set the pressures. Without one, the appliance should not be used on LPG.

Do I need a rangehood over a gas hob?

It is strongly recommended. Gas produces combustion products and moisture, and a rangehood that vents outside removes them far better than a recirculating one.

Will my LPG bottles run a big cooker?

It depends on what else runs on them. We check the regulator, pipe size and total load, especially if you also have LPG hot water or heating.

Can you swap my electric cooktop for gas?

Yes, if there is a sensible route for the gas pipe and somewhere suitable outside for bottles or a tank. We look at both before quoting.
