Most appliance floods start with a connection that was rushed: an old hose reused, a valve nobody can reach, or a drain hose pushed into a standpipe at the wrong height. The machine works for a while, then something lets go on a weekday when nobody is home.
Cheeky's Plumbers installs dishwashers, washing machines, laundry tubs and fridge water lines across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. We fit the machine the way the manufacturer intends, run a full test cycle, and show you where to turn the water off.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

What a proper appliance connection includes
A dishwasher or washing machine needs three things done right: water in, water out, and a way to shut it off. On a typical install we check or fit:
- An isolating valve on each supply you can reach without pulling the machine out
- New inlet hoses rated for your water pressure, never the old ones
- A drain hose looped to the height the manufacturer specifies, so the machine cannot siphon
- A proper spigot on the sink trap, or a correctly sized standpipe and trap for a washing machine
- A full test cycle, watching the fill and the pump-out for leaks
Braided hoses: the part that fails quietly
Flexible braided hoses feed most washing machines, dishwashers, mixers and toilets. Research by insurer IAG in Australia found these hoses last around 10 years, and that hose failures made up 22% of the 15,000 household water damage claims it looked at in one year. Warning signs include kinks, bulging, rust on the braid and any weeping at the fittings.
IAG said at the time it was not aware of a major braided hose problem in New Zealand, but the hoses here are the same type and age the same way. When we install an appliance we fit new hoses, and we will check the other flexible hoses in the kitchen and laundry if you want. Knowing where your shut-off valves are, including the toby near your boundary, matters most on the day a hose lets go.
How It Works
Dishwasher wastes and kitchen connections
A dishwasher usually drains into the kitchen sink trap through a spigot. Level, the BRANZ guide to sustainable building, notes that one trap can serve two domestic sinks and a dishwasher, but a sink with a waste disposal unit must be trapped separately. If you are adding a dishwasher beside an existing waste disposal unit, the waste layout under the bench may need changing.
We also handle the supply side: a dedicated valve, the right hot or cold connection for the model, and enough slack to slide the machine out. Fridges with ice makers get a cold line with its own valve, an inline filter if you want one, and a route that will not be crushed under the fridge. For bigger changes such as moving the sink, see our kitchen plumbing page.
Laundry tubs, standpipes and moving a laundry
A washing machine can drain to its own trapped standpipe or share a trap with a laundry tub. Level confirms one trap may serve one laundry tub and one washing machine, and that the discharge pipe from a fixture to its trap seal must be no longer than 1.2 m. We replace cracked or rusted tubs, fit new tap sets and wastes, and set standpipes at a height that suits the machine's pump.
Moving a laundry is common in renovations. MBIE guidance gives moving an existing laundry tub to a new spot in the adjacent kitchen of a house as an example of exempt building work. Longer moves can need new drainage, and drainlaying work and consent with Christchurch City Council, Selwyn District Council or Waimakariri District Council are assessed case by case before we quote.
Garage laundries and Christchurch frosts
Plenty of New Zealand homes have the laundry in an unheated garage or lean-to, and in Christchurch that matters. The city averages around 80 ground frost days a year, and Master Plumbers recommends lagging pipes in garages, roof spaces and under floors because freezing can split pipes and fittings. A washing machine hose or valve on an outside wall in Hornby or Rolleston can freeze on a hard frosty night, so we route and lag the supply where we can and fit valves that are easy to reach.
If you are in a newer home in Wigram or Lincoln with a laundry cupboard on a concrete slab, the waste has to be set up correctly from the start, because changing it later means cutting into the floor. Older homes can still have galvanised supply pipe or worn stop taps behind the machine that will not shut off fully. Replacing those when the new appliance goes in is quick and saves a callout later.
Cost of appliance installation
A straight swap where the valves, waste and space are already right sits at the lower end. New isolating valves, a new standpipe or tub, fridge lines run a distance, frost lagging or moving the laundry add to the price, and we confirm a fixed price before we start.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Appliance Installation
New hoses every install
We never reuse old inlet hoses, because they are one of the most common causes of laundry and kitchen floods.
A valve you can reach
Every machine gets an isolating valve you can turn off without pulling the appliance out.
Wastes set up to the manual
Drain hose height, standpipe size and trap layout follow the manufacturer's instructions, so the machine drains and does not siphon.
Frost-aware in garages
Supply pipes in cold garages and lean-tos are routed and lagged to reduce the risk of a winter split.
Fixed price, on time
You know the cost before we start, and we test a full cycle before we leave.
Appliance Installation FAQs
Can you install my new dishwasher?
Yes. We connect the supply and waste, fit an isolating valve if there is not one, level the machine and run a full test cycle.
How often should washing machine hoses be replaced?
IAG research in Australia found braided hoses last around 10 years. Replace them sooner if they are kinked, bulging, rusty or weeping at the fittings.
Can a dishwasher share the kitchen sink trap?
Usually, yes. Level notes one trap can serve two domestic sinks and a dishwasher, but a sink with a waste disposal unit must be trapped separately.
Can I move my laundry to the kitchen?
Often. MBIE gives moving a laundry tub into the adjacent kitchen as an example of exempt building work. Longer moves may need drainlaying and consent, which we check first.
Can my garage laundry freeze?
Pipes and hoses on cold garage walls can freeze on a hard frost. Lagging the supply and keeping valves accessible reduces the risk of a split.
How much does appliance installation cost?
New valves, standpipes, fridge lines or moving the laundry add to the price, and we confirm it before starting.
