A weak shower is easy to live with and surprisingly hard to diagnose. Plenty of Christchurch households swap shower heads, blame the council or simply put up with a trickle, when the real cause is a toby that was never fully reopened, a clogged valve or old pipe that has narrowed from the inside.

We treat low pressure as something to measure. Readings at the boundary and at each fixture show where the drop happens, and once we know where, the cheapest fix is usually obvious.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Low Water Pressure Jobs We Handle Across Christchurch

  • No water pressure
  • Low hot water pressure
  • Weak shower pressure
  • Pressure pump installs
  • Water hammer and banging pipes

Why pressure drops in Christchurch homes

Christchurch's water comes from deep aquifer wells and is pumped into the city's network, with hill suburbs fed from reservoirs or tanks to keep pressure steady. On the flat, a pressure problem is usually inside the property, at a valve, a pipe or a pressure reducing valve. The causes we find most often are:

  • A toby or main valve left partly closed after earlier work, or seized half open
  • Galvanised steel pipe in older bungalows narrowed by internal rust
  • A low-pressure hot water cylinder fed from a header tank or valve
  • A blocked or failing valve on the incoming supply
  • Debris and scale in tap aerators, mixer cartridges and shower heads
  • A hidden leak on the buried supply pipe bleeding pressure away
  • Rural properties on a restricted supply, where water trickles into a tank and a pump does the work

Pressure versus flow

Pressure is how hard the water pushes. Flow is how much actually reaches you. A house can show healthy static pressure at the connection box and still have a miserable shower, because a narrow or partly blocked pipe lets the flow collapse the moment a tap opens.

That is why we test both. We take a static reading with everything turned off, then measure pressure and flow with fixtures running. If the loss happens between the boundary and the house, the buried supply pipe is the suspect and may need a water main repair. If it happens at a single fixture, the fault sits with that tap, valve or mixer.

How It Works

Static pressure and flow test at the connection box
Readings at each tap and shower to find the drop
Check for frost-exposed pipe, leaks and part-closed valves
Plain explanation of the cause and the options
Fixed-price repair: valve, pipe, pump or cylinder
Retest to confirm the improvement

Frosty mornings, quake-era pipes and hill sections

Christchurch averages about 80 ground frost days a year. When a pipe under a timber floor, in a garage or running up an outside wall starts to freeze, ice narrows the bore before it blocks it completely, so the first sign is often a shower that is fine in the afternoon and weak at 7am. That is a warning worth acting on: Master Plumbers notes that freezing can split pipes, fittings and even cylinders. Lagging the exposed run usually solves it, and a split pipe is a job for our burst pipe repairs team.

On flat land that moved in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, buried supply pipes and the joins made during repairs can leak slowly into the soil, stealing pressure without an obvious puddle. On the Port Hills, in suburbs such as Cashmere, a house near the top of a street simply has less head of water above it than one lower down. Where the supply is genuinely low, a correctly sized water pump is the right answer, not a bigger pipe.

Hot side weaker than cold

If only the hot water is weak, the cylinder is almost always the reason. Many older Christchurch houses still run a low-pressure cylinder fed through a header tank in the roof space or a pressure reducing valve, which delivers a fraction of the pressure on the cold side. Mix the two at a modern mixer and you get weak, uneven flow and temperature swings.

The options are to balance the cold supply to match, fit a valve that equalises the two sides, or upgrade to a mains pressure hot water cylinder. A header tank in a cold roof space is also one of the pipes most at risk in a hard frost, which can tip the decision. We explain the costs of each before you choose.

When the problem is on the council's side

Christchurch City Council owns the connection box (the toby or meter box) and the meter, wherever it sits, and the pipe from the main to your boundary. The point of supply is the boundary, and the supply pipe from there into the house is the owner's. If pressure is already low at the connection box, the issue may be on the council side, and we give you the readings so you can report it on 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169. In Selwyn and Waimakariri, the district council is the one to call.

Pressure that is too high causes trouble as well, from dripping relief valves to banging pipes. If we find that, we fit a pressure limiting valve and look at any water hammer at the same visit.

What affects the cost

The final price depends on what the readings show:

  • Simple fixes such as clearing aerators or fully opening a valve
  • Replacing a pressure reducing valve or isolation valve
  • Replacing a length of narrowed, frost-damaged or leaking supply pipe
  • Installing a pressure pump for a restricted supply, tank water or a high section
  • Upgrading from a low-pressure to a mains pressure cylinder

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Low Water Pressure

Measured, not guessed

We take static and running readings at the boundary and at each fixture, so the repair targets the point where pressure is actually lost.

Readings for the council

If pressure is already low at the connection box, you get the numbers to give Christchurch City Council or your district council, rather than a bill for work on their side.

Cheapest fix first

A half-closed toby or a clogged aerator gets sorted before anyone talks about pumps, new pipe or a new cylinder.

Price agreed upfront

Any repair is priced and agreed with you before we start.

Low Water Pressure FAQs

Why has my water pressure suddenly dropped?

A sudden drop usually means a leak, a valve knocked partly closed, or work on the council network. Ask a neighbour first. If their pressure is fine, the problem is likely on your property.

Why is my shower weak only on frosty mornings?

A pipe in a cold spot is starting to freeze and the ice is narrowing it. Run the cold tap gently, never use a naked flame, and have the pipe lagged before a harder frost splits it.

Is low pressure the council's fault?

Sometimes, but the cause is more often on your side of the boundary. We test at the connection box to show which side the problem is on.

Why is only my hot water weak?

Usually because the house has a low-pressure cylinder or a faulty valve on the hot side. Balancing valves or a mains pressure cylinder will fix it.

Will a new shower head fix low pressure?

Only if the old one is blocked. If the supply itself is weak, a new head makes little difference.

Can a pump improve my pressure?

Yes, where the supply is genuinely low, such as on a hill section, on tank water or on a restricted rural supply. It needs to be sized for your house.
