Rolleston, Lincoln, Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Pegasus: the first generation of cylinders is ageing

Much of the housing in these towns has gone up in the last twenty years, so the cylinders fitted to the first homes in Rolleston, Pegasus and the newer parts of Lincoln and Rangiora are now past the 10 to 15 year life Consumer NZ gives as a guide. Most are mains pressure units already, and the job is usually a replacement with new valves, a check of the drain lines and restraint brought into line with current G12/AS1 practice.

The towns sit on different power networks, and that affects sizing. Rolleston and Lincoln are on Orion, which can switch controlled cylinders off at peak times on very cold mornings and evenings, so on a controlled tariff we pick a capacity that still covers the household's showers. Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Pegasus are on MainPower, and there we check how your hot water is metered before recommending a size. Building consents and water supply also sit with Selwyn and Waimakariri District Councils rather than Christchurch City Council.

Kaiapoi breaks the new-build pattern, with older homes repaired after heavy land damage in 2010 sitting beside newer housing. In repaired homes we pay close attention to how the cylinder is fixed and connected. Lincoln's original 1862 grid around the belts and the older streets near Rangiora's High Street also hold older homes where pipe condition needs checking before mains pressure. Frost is common across both districts, with Rangiora's July average low barely above zero, so garage pipework is lagged.
