Wigram has grown quickly through 21st century subdivisions, much of it on the former Wigram Aerodrome. After the airfield closed in 2009, Ngāi Tahu Property subdivided the land into the Wigram Skies development, with The Runway following the route of the old runway. Smaller subdivisions such as Broken Run, which created 126 residential lots in 2005, sit near the headwaters of the Heathcote River. Choosing a new cylinder for your Wigram home comes down to household size, where it sits, water pressure and how you want to heat it. We talk you through electric, heat pump and LPG options and give you a clear quote.
Wigram Skies homes: first cylinder replacements and valve wear
Wigram's housing is mostly from the 21st century, built in Wigram Skies, The Runway and smaller subdivisions such as Broken Run. These homes went up with mains pressure cylinders, often in garages or compact spaces above them, and the earliest are now reaching the age, roughly 10 to 15 years by Consumer NZ's reckoning, when tanks start to fail. Because every home on the former aerodrome is recent, pipe condition is rarely a concern, and the work centres on the cylinder, its valves and the space it sits in.
Before a cylinder fails completely, its valves often show wear first: a relief valve that drips all the time, or a pressure limiting valve that lets pressure creep up. Replacing the valves can extend the life of a cylinder whose tank is still sound. If the tank itself leaks, we replace it with a unit sized for the household as it is now, which may differ from when the house was new.
The city's coldest recorded temperature, minus 9.4 degrees in July 1945, was measured at Wigram, and the open flat ground still brings hard frosts. Garage cylinders and their exposed pipes are lagged, and drain outlets are placed so they do not freeze. New builds with the cylinder in a tight space also need the safe tray and its drain checked whenever the cylinder is swapped.
Local tip: If the relief valve on your Wigram cylinder drips all the time, get it looked at early, because it may be a valve fault rather than a failing tank.
