Early 1900s homes in Spreydon and Beckenham, elevated homes on the Port Hills at Cashmere, suburban and semi-rural Hoon Hay, fast-growing Halswell subdivisions and historic homes in Lyttelton. For many years Christchurch supplied drinking water straight from deep aquifers with no treatment at all. That changed in 2018, when the council began chlorinating much of the city, and chlorine has since been added to every supply zone. The water is safe to drink, but for many households it no longer tastes the way it used to.
Water filtration on the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula
South Christchurch and the Port Hills include both town supply homes and properties on private tanks. Cashmere and other hill suburbs are fed from reservoirs or tanks on the council network, so their water is the same chlorinated aquifer supply as the flat suburbs, and a carbon filter for taste is the usual request. Beckenham, Spreydon and Halswell are similar.
On Banks Peninsula, Birdlings Flat, Little River, Pigeon Bay and Wainui are restricted supplies where each property stores water in its own tank. Once water sits in a private tank, the household is responsible for keeping it safe, so filtration there is about safety as well as taste. Those systems usually need a sediment filter and UV treatment, with the UV lamp replaced every year. Akaroa's water, by contrast, is membrane filtered and chlorinated.
Homes on steep Cashmere and Lyttelton sections sometimes have high water pressure at the bottom of the hill and lower pressure higher up. We check pressure before fitting a whole house filter, because a filter adds some resistance and the system must still deliver good flow at the top floor.
Halswell's new subdivisions often include space for filtration in the build, and we can fit a whole house unit at the point of entry. Older Beckenham villas may have galvanised pipe, which can cause rusty water that a filter only hides. We check before recommending anything. Christchurch water is soft, so softeners are rarely needed, and we set up reminders for cartridge and lamp changes.
Spreydon homes on former swampland usually have simple flat supply runs, which keeps installation quick. Hoon Hay properties on the semi rural edge sometimes have private tanks for garden use, and those need separate treatment if the water is used for drinking.
Local tip: If you are on a private tank near Little River or Wainui, change the UV lamp every year, even if the water looks clear.

Water Filtration South Christchurch and Port Hills FAQs
Does my Cashmere home need a filter for safety?
No. The water is chlorinated and safe. A filter is for taste and smell. Private tank supplies on Banks Peninsula are different and usually need UV treatment.
Is Christchurch tap water safe to drink?
Yes. It comes from deep aquifers and is now chlorinated in every zone. A filter on town supply is mainly about taste and smell.
Do I need a water softener in Christchurch?
Usually not. The council's typical analysis shows a hardness of about 45 g/m3, which rarely calls for a softener.
